Moving to a dorm can be scary and exciting all at once. Today I’m sharing some tips and college dorm room ideas to make your room feel like a home away from home.
What an exciting time of year for someone moving to a college dorm room for the first time! New school supplies, new school, new roommates. It’s all fun... then when classes start the REAL fun begins! Today I’m sharing a few college dorm room ideas so you can make your small dorm room your new home!
Let’s start with the basics. We all know that dorm rooms can be intimidating upon arrival. They look like a plain box! Here are three simple college dorm room ideas I know will make your room look homier and more inviting.
Area rugs - Area rugs do three things. They add warmth and coziness to the room (and who doesn't like to have something soft on their feet!?) They absorb sound, which is great when trying to study or sneak in quietly! And they add color and patterns to help personalize the space.
Bedding - Great bedding, like super soft comforter pillows and sheets, are so important since you spend a lot of time on your bed studying.
Artwork - Bringing in artwork like tapestries and framed photos will make those boring concrete walls seems a bit (or a lot) more inviting.
When it comes to your college room decor ideas, one common mistake I’ve seen in the past is simply not doing anything at all. You are in your dorm room more than you realize, so make it a place you like to come back. The organization is a must, poor organization leads to clutter and you can’t focus when the space around you is in chaos.
If you walk into your dorm room and think that you just have no space to place everything, here are three organizational pieces that will help organize your dorm room and not make it so cluttered:
Raised Bed - Having a raised bed and being able to have storage underneath.
Shelves - Shelving above the head of the bed which is usually a forgotten space.
Storage Caddie - Bedside storage caddies are handy to keep your stuff in so it doesn’t end up falling off your bed.
Tip: Adding decorative paper to storage boxes is a great way to pretty things up.
Giving your room character and making it feel homier will help when you start feeling homesick. Implementing artwork on the walls is a great start to do that! Find whatever makes you happy and go for it! If you aren’t sure about what art to buy, think about the art as an extension of who you are or who you want to be now that you are on your own. Do you have plans to travel after college? Maybe photos of places you want to travel to? Do you like flowers? Then go for florals which can be photos or paintings. Are you someone who likes trends? How about cactus’ or geometric's or pineapples?
You can also go with a certain color palette. Let’s say it’s blue. You can have a cool blue door photo or an image of water, a beautiful ikat pattern in indigo, abstract shapes in blue… and the list goes on!
There is so much you can do to make your college dorm feel like a your space. Adding a tapestry to the wall can add sound absorption as well as something pretty to look at. Fairy lights are great for adding ambiance to space. Storage ottomans are perfect for storage, helping you get up to your bed, and as extra seating in the room for guests. Shelving does double duty that goes above your desk area creating, storage and additional space for decor items. Curtains are a pretty way to spruce up a dorm room and get privacy.
Moving to a dorm can be scary, but by implementing these tips, your room will not only reflect all the things you love but be a home away from home! I’d love to see your college dorm room ideas for the new year!
