Adding Polka Dots to Your Artwork | Inner Artist

January 8, 2018

When you think polka dots, you may be thinking a generic series of colored circles creating some kind of pattern. But polka dots can be so much more!!

Open your mind a bit and consider how some colorful spots can really better a piece of your art and how you can fit them in.

For some inspiration, here are some that we designed with that philosophy in mind.

 First, a classic:

This piece uses watercolor mediums to mix a series of polka dots to create a full image. Mixing a few colors in with different shades is a great way to efficiently include a full palette.

Next, we will look at a more complex layer of dots. Different shapes, sizes, and sequences can switch up the usual look of a polka dot piece. When you create your own art on Inner Artist, a pattern like this can be the background to a piece that focuses on something else in front of it. Dots act as a great background or main visual element to a piece.

Just like this!

Take your dots to an abstract style instead and have fun mixing circles and ovals. Who said you had to stay inside the lines? Certainly not us.

And finally, dots don't have to stay behind the scenes. Find a way to incorporate them into the actual focal points of your piece like this one does with the flowers. This makes for a unique image and art that's totally you.
